Well-Child Exam Q&A

What are well-child exams?

Well-child exams at Astoria Pediatric PC include medical evaluations that ensure your baby, child, or teenager stays healthy. The exams also allow your child’s provider to detect possible medical problems before they turn serious.

The experts at Astoria Pediatric PC have many years of experience and care for patients up to age 26. Their friendly, fun demeanor helps patients of all ages feel at ease during appointments.

What happens during well-child exams?

During well-child exams at Astoria Pediatric PC, you can expect the following:

Vital signs check

An Astoria Pediatric PC provider weighs your child, evaluates their height, and checks the head circumference of babies and young kids. A specialist assesses children’s body mass index (BMI), growth patterns, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs.

Medical history review

A pediatric provider reviews your child’s personal and family medical history, symptoms, medication regimen, possible allergies, and lifestyle habits. They address questions or concerns you may have about your child’s growth and development.

Physical exam

During a physical exam, your child’s provider evaluates their eyes, ears, throat, heartbeat, reflexes, breathing, and more to further assess their overall health.

Diagnostic testing

If necessary, an Astoria Pediatric PC specialist may recommend diagnostic tests. Examples include hearing screenings, vision screenings, urine tests, blood tests, allergy or asthma testing, X-rays, or other imaging procedures. They also offer developmental screenings and psychiatric evaluations.

Treatment

If your child needs treatment for a medical problem, their provider tailors a treatment plan to match their needs. They offer nutrition counseling, medication prescriptions, medical weight management, vaccines, specialist referrals, and more.

When should I schedule well-child exams?

Babies and young children require frequent well-child exams. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following well-child exam schedule for babies, kids, and teens:

  • 3-5 days old
  • 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9 months old
  • 12, 15, and 18 months old

  • Once a year after age 3
