Vision Screening Q&A

What is vision screening?

Vision screening at Astoria Pediatric PC uses various tests to detect possible problems with your child’s eyesight. The screenings can detect nearsightedness, farsightedness, or other vision issues that affect how your child learns at school or completes everyday tasks.

What are the benefits of vision screening?

The main benefit you can expect when choosing vision screening at Astoria Pediatric PC is the early detection of vision problems or eye diseases. Detecting such issues before they become serious can reduce learning struggles, headaches, and other unpleasant complications.

What are the signs my child has a vision impairment?

Your child could have vision impairment if they squint or get headaches often, struggle to see the chalkboard or markerboard at school, or complain about difficulty seeing objects clearly. Schedule an appointment at Astoria Pediatric PC if your child complains of eye pain or experiences ongoing red, watery, itchy, or crusted eyes.

What happens during vision screening?

An Astoria Pediatric PC provider can complete vision screenings during children’s wellness checkups or at a separate visit.

During a vision screening, your child stands or sits down and covers one of their eyes. They read numbers, letters, or both from an eye chart from a distance. They then cover the other eye and repeat and may read from the eye chart with both eyes uncovered.

Your child’s specialist examines your child’s eyes, reviews their medical history and possible symptoms, and might ask them to look at words, numbers, or letters from a closer distance.

If your child has signs or symptoms of vision impairment or eye disease, their Astoria Pediatric PC provider may refer them to an eye doctor for further evaluation.

How often does my child need vision screening?

An Astoria Pediatric PC provider lets you know when to schedule your child’s vision screenings or wellness checkups. It could be every two years starting at age three or four. Feel free to book an appointment for your child any time they experience signs of a vision problem, such as squinting or headaches.
